Creative heritage as contemporary collecting: the role of performing arts and cultural memory in migrant heritage preservation

This article outlines the ongoing development of the creative heritage method through its application in research with migrant communities and heritage collections in Queensland, Australia. The creative heritage approach is offered up in this article as a contemporary collecting tool, one that is especially effective in engaging diverse communities who are marginally represented within heritage collections. The use of various artforms in this research provides further evidence of the significance of the creative arts as a catalyst for modified cultural heritage practices that focus on heritage futures, something urgently needed in the currently volatile social and political environment, globally.

Performing cultural heritage as a method of preservation in migrant communities

This article details informal heritage practices being carried out by Ukrainian, Iranian, and Sri Lankan migrant communities in Queensland. Ethnographic research revealed these case study communities regularly engage in cultural heritage via three main activities: cultural maintenance, public representation, and informal archival practices, which are aligned through the activation of intangible creative practice and knowledges. These activities are positioned as ‘living’ methods of heritage preservation which are enacted through the ‘performance’ of heritage in the everyday life of diaspora communities. This article explores the implications of maintaining migrant heritage both in community and industry settings, foregrounding the significance of considering the future of Australian heritage collections.
